President
After two years running as the social secretary, I was eager to take the society in a new direction. With an impressive power source of forward thinking, young innovators, I revamped the society the once purely social society. As innovation President, I was able to fulfil my passion, to add into a society, a platform in which facilitated opportunities for young, skilled individuals to be change makers today. Liaising and networking with innovators in the industry, I have organised talks, discussions, and internship opportunity talks. I have run socials and organised formals, paying fine attention to details, and improving each with feedback from the last, all to create valuable experiences for our members. Leading a team has taught me many lessons from delegating, time planning and budgeting to navigating the obstacles of coronavirus.
Organised, Facilitated and Consulted: Innovation Sprint
One of my most exciting things I organised was a 24 hour innovation design sprint. We compiled four briefs for our attendees to choose from, each addressing a different social issue. Throughout the day I organised consultants to come in and advise, whilst being a consultant myself for teams. It was great to see attendees working together from different subjects and of different ages. It was an incredible learning experience for me to facilitate the sprint and conversations for teams, helping them to question their own ideas and iterate them for the better.
I was delighted to receive positive feedback and eagerness for subsequent events. One of the best things to come out of the sprint was the fact that one of the teams is still liaising with their industry expert and is amid taking forward with their idea. From one room of multidisciplinary individuals, just 24 hours and the innovation from bright minds, this is the impact that inspires me to want to organise more, bigger events for creating change, now. Facilitating the groups through innovation techniques and helping to probe ideas and energize them was an incredible experience and really displayed to me how much I have learned and grown over my degree. The success of the sprint and my role as president, have highlighted to me how much I want to delve further into facilitating co-creation of solutions. In this role I have also presented frequently to year groups.
For me the ability to take my learnings from my subject and transfer them into leading a society, then to do external talks and consult has been an honour. Off the back of my work with the society, and much liaising and talking with industry experts I was approached by the Bristol Innovators Group to host innovation talks. Bristol innovators Group is a community of Innovators in Bristol that meet, host events and conversations to co-create change. I have co-hosted a talk on Disruptive Innovation and the Next Generation of Innovation Leaders, looking at the current and future climate of innovation. It has been incredible to develop opportunities and events that will hopefully carry on throughout the existence of the society, all in all creating a more sustainable impact, led by young innovators.
