Teaching and drama

In all I do I ensure that each issue is looked at from a deeper level than the surface and, that every message I am trying to communicate is conveyed on a deeper level than the surface. With a psychological understanding, I aim to ensure that the message is conveyed in a manner that is more innate and meaningful to the receiver so that they are more likely to accept the message, be motivated to do something, to adopt a behaviour or be thought provoked.

I have learned a huge amount from working as an English teacher to young Japanese teenagers. This job has been a learning curve in the way that I must be creative with how I get across a message to students with little English, whilst remaining engaging. I am passionate about the ability to craft an experience that is meaningful to people.

I enjoy my ability to really pay attention to detail of my audience and the context, to convey a message in the most meaningful way to them, drawing in knowledge from research and prior experience.

I enjoy planning and organising lessons in a way that each lesson is different, ideating new activities which will not only help my students learn English but also practice meaningful skills for the future, boosting confidence and learning lifelong lessons. I love creating lessons in a way that give children an experience that they have never had before, making lessons memorable and impactful in their learning.

I have led a drama club of thirty 4-6 year olds which involved; planning drama lessons; taking the children through exercises and engaging them to create mini performances by the end of classes. I have also worked as a children’s party host, which involved learning scripts and leading a party through the script and role of different characters, with intermittent games and activities. I would lead the party and liaise with the parents, whilst keeping the children engaged.

I find working with children incredible to learn from and reflect on these learnings to incorporate this into my innovation and business life. With drama, and teaching you must think on your feet, improvise a lot and experiment with different ways of doing things. Each class I would teach, I would review the successes and work out how to improve.

I practiced being an active listener and attentive to any need for adjustment, making sure that all communication was tailored, appropriate to each dynamic scenario. Teaching drama and leading children’s parties was incredible as children will tell you exactly how it is. You have no choice but to think on the spot and adjust your communication to be more appropriate and engaging. Through both teaching and drama, I have exercised my ability to think out of the box, and on the spot.

In these jobs I strengthen my value of play and humour in the workplace, in the way that it is so important for facilitating innovation and creativity without borders. My creativity is exercised and my ability to remain imaginatively iterative has been strengthened through this experience.

From doing public speaking competitions and performing arts from a very young age, I have gained good experience with presenting and feel confident when public speaking to large groups. I find communicating in a way that people can empathise with to be a valuable skill, as well as being able to convey whatever message or lesson through a sense of storytelling
